The Tom Bates Incident

June 21, 2001
Jason Paul drafted: Jason Paul was picked up during the Major League Baseball draft by a Minnesota Twins farm club. "This is a great help to our organization," said Rob Preseau, "it boosts the importance we have in this area. We are sad to hear that he will be leaving us, he was a very key part of the team. This hurts my plans for continuity since the departure of C. W. Mayher and Jim Pool."

No word yet if the Mets will sign Brandon Wislocki, who is scheduled to return to the NMU team in the fall.

Information about the "Alaska - Tom Bates Incident" is released: Details as to why Tom Bates did not return with the NMU team after a road trip to Alaska has been partially released. Alaska State Police, in conjunction with the Royal Canadian Mounties, say that Tom will remain in their custody. They also announced that evidence and witnesses have been found, but refuse to say any more. Northern Michigan University has reached agreement with the authorities to allow Bates to teleconference with his teachers, letting him earn his degree.

To prevent another incident, Northern has offered to host all Alaskan teams for next season.

Another Wykon signs with NMU: Rob Preseau announced today that Matt Honold of West Iron County will be joining the NMU Baseball team. Matt helped propel the West Iron Wykons to West Pac conference champions in 2001 when he stole two home runs while patrolling left field. Matt is the second Wykon on the team in two years, joining Josh Pifke, who was only a relief pitcher when the two were last on a team together.
