"It was truely an unfortunate incident," Manager Rob Preseau said of a fight during the top of the fourth inning of todays NMU baseball game at Trinity College.

"Our team was flustered from the offensive number they put up and I think we let emotions get the better of us."

Tensions stemmed from an incident in the bottom of the third when Wildcat pitcher Vinnie Davidson brushed Neptunes right fielder Abbie Green back with an inside fastball. The Neptunes had already scored two runs in the inning and had runners on the corners. After Will Phillips came on to complete the inning, Trinity College pitcher Danny Kelly sought retribution by brushing back Wildcat leftfielder Bryan Wislocki to begin the next inning.

Wislocki promptly responded by hitting a come-backer, which Kelly somehow caught rebounding off his face after it shattered his cheekbone. Kelly was replaced by Shannon Abernathy who walked Ken Kwarciany and threw the next pitch to the screen alowing him to advance. A two out infield single by Dave Vincent put runners on the corners. Vincent had beaten an off balence throw by Abernathy, who Vincent then aledgedly claimed threw like a girl.

When a pick off attempt hit Vincent in the shoulder, he charged the mound and both benches cleared. Three Wildcats, Vincent, second baseman Eric Ingles, and designated hitter Dave Peck were ejected in the melee. The worst news of this unfortunate incident was an injury to relief pitcher Jason Neuman. He will undergo tests when the team returns home tomorrow.

The brawl tainted an otherwise great game. The Wildcats took an early lead on a pair second inning singles by Peck and Vincent. Trinity broke through in the third, however when three sucessive one out doubles drove Wildcat starter Kris Koester from the mound. Phillips was able to get out of the inning with a bases loaded strikeout, however the damage was done and the Neptunes lead stood at 4-1. They extended it in the fourth on four consecutive singles and only an amazing throw by James Hass kept more runs from scoring. Josh Pifke came on to close the fourth and for the second day in a row pitched excellent baseball. In five and one-third innings of work he struck out seven, surrendered two hits and allowed no runs, keeping his season ERA at zero after two games and six and one-third innings. Kwarciany chipped into the lead with a sixth inning home run to left, but the real comeback was sparked by Brandon Wislocki in the eighth when he singled and scored on a single by Kwarciany.

The hard hitting Wildcat first baseman then scored on a double by DH Tom Bates. A double by Jody Davis brought Bates home. Davis could have scored two batters later on a single by pinch hitter Clay Roth, but was cut down by an excellent throw by Naptunes center fielder Jody Paris. The Wildcats completed the comeback with two outs in the ninth. With Wislockis on the corners, they executed a perfect double steal, Brandon scoring the tying run and Bryan going to second with the go-ahead run. After Kwarciany was walked intentionally, a single by Bates put the 'Cats ahead for good.

"I think the brawl actually energized us for the rest of the game," Kwarciany said. "We were back on our heels with the momentum flowing their way, but Haas came up with some big defense in the fourth and Pifke showed us what he's capable of."

Pifke was able to close it out with a one-two-three ninth inning for the 7-6 victory. The Wildcats now go to 2-0 on the season. They return home for a brief homestand against Moorhead State and Kettering.
