Game One:
Pitching dominates home opener. The first game of the two game set versus Moorhead State was a display of excellent pitching. Jim Pool dominated the Dragons for 7 full innings before he ran into trouble in the eighth. Vinnie Davidson worked his way out of the jam and shut Moorhead St down in the ninth to earn the save.

The Offense came from two unusual sources as back to back doubles by Tom Bates and Kevin Trenkle opened the scoring in the fifth. A Brandon Wislocki sacrifice bunt scored Trenkle and the Wildcats took a 2-0 lead. The same pair struck again in the sixth as Bates walked and Trenkle brought him home with a triple.

Trenkle had been 0 for 7 in 9 plate appearances going into this game. A single in the eighth lifts his average to .300 on the young season. Pool did exactly as expected on the mound. Two of the 5 hits he surrendered came during a Dragon rally in the eighth.

He struck out ten batters while walking just two and did not allow a run. Davidson was just as effective in relief, ending the Moorhead State threat with two strike outs in the eighth and giving up just a bloop single in the ninth for the save.

The Wildcats earn their first shutout of the year with the 3-0 victory.

Game Two:
Mayher no-hits Dragons. "Mr. Excitement" C. W. Mayher was anxious to get back to the friendly confines of Beef-A-Rood Field and he made his first home start of the year count, yielding no hits in a complete game shut out win over Moorhead St.

"I know how this field works and I felt confident going into the game," Mayher said. "I just had to throw at them everything I had." Mayher and Moorhead St pitcher Nate Clinton worked dueling perfect games until the bottom of the fifth when Justin Young broke through with a single. A fielding error by right fielder Sean Belotte almost cost Mayher his bid at a perfect game in the sixth.

For the second game in a row, Kevin Trenkle showed he could swing the bat. He provided the only offense of the game with a solo home run to lead off the sixth. "It's good to see Kevin begining to come through on offense," Manager Rob Preseau said. "He's been a great contributor on defense and it's good to see him hit the ball."

But the biggest performance of the home opener was the pitching of Mayher. He threw the first complete game since Steve Foley's second start of the 1999 season. Mayher's 12 strikeouts are the most by a Wildcat pitcher since Chuck Borowitz shut down Michigan Tech with 14 K's on May 3, 1998. Foley also had the last no hitter by a Wildcat earlier that season.

Mayher's control was as good as it could have been, as he walked just three Dragons. He cruised to the finish, striking out the last four batters he faced on just 15 pitches.

Though Trenkle's newfound prowess with the bat is an unexpected bonus, the rest of the team's struggles is troubling to batting coach Jason Kouw. "Although Mayher had a big night, offensively this game was about as painful to watch as a Bam-Bam Biggalo shoot interview."

NMU finishes this brief homestand tomorrow night against the Kettering Engineers. Chris Bing will start for the 'Cats.
