'Cats clobber Engineers. The offensive woes of the home opener against Moorhead St were finally exorcized as the NMU baseball team took out their bats against Kettering. Brandon Wislocki got things started yet again with a
triple to left on the first pitch he saw in the first inning.
Bryan Wislocki drove him home with a single to right two pitches later. Justin Young continued with the assault
with a two run homer to the short porch in right. The Wildcats struck again in the third as Brandon Wislocki
singled and stole second before Dave Peck doubled him home. Kevin Trenkle continued his offensive power with a
fourth inning solo home run.
Defensively, Chris Bing got himself in trouble on several occasions, but was able to work out of it. Young made
a diving grab to save a sure extra base hit with runners on the corners in the third. The Engineers loaded the
bases with no one out in the fifth but a Bing strike out and a circus-act double play started by Eric Ingles
ended the threat.
The Wildcats added more runs in the sixth when Kevin Trenkle and Jason Paul hit back-to-back doubles. Paul
scored on a single by Ingles two hitters later. Ingles then scored on a single by Brandon Wislocki. In the
eighth, Paul added one more insurance run by lobbing a fly ball to the spacious left field at Beef-A-Roo
Field and rounding the bases before the Engineer outfield could chase down the ball.
The inside the park home run put the lead at 9-0. Bing worked 8 innings of shutout ball though he surrendered
eight hits. Control wise, Bing had an excellent day, walking just two batters and striking out ten. Peck struck
out one hitter during a one-two-three ninth.
"I think this home stand showed we could win every way," Manager Rob Preseau said. "We've won with offense,
we've won with pitching, and we've won with good defense." The still unbeaten Wildcats now take a one week
tour of Alaska, facing UA-Anchorage, UA-Pacific, and UA-Fairbanks.
