The NMU baseball team faced Cleveland Institute of Arts in the first semifinal of the Great Lakes Invitational of Baseball.
Dave Glavin got his first start since joining the team and scattered six hits in five innings of work. He was able to
shut CIA down until running into trouble in the fifth. The Impressionists scored twice on a double, two walks and a
single, driving Glavin from the mound. Those two runs erased a 1-0 Wildcats lead forged in the second inning when
Todd Small doubled to the gap in right and James Hass followed with an RBI single.
CIA extended their 2-1 lead when relief pitcher Vinnie Davidson ran into trouble in the sixth, allowing a run to
score on a bases loaded walk. The double play combo of Eric Ingles and Kevin Trenkle struck again to end the threat.
But the Impressionists struck again in the seventh. After Davidson gave up a one out triple and a single on the
next pitch, Will Phillips came on, striking out the first man he faced but allowing back to back doubles, extending
the CIA lead to 6-1.
Several Wildcats chances were nipped in the bud. Brandon Wislocki drew a lead-off walk in the third but was picked off by the hidden ball trick. "CIA always has a few tricks up their sleeves," Manager Rob Preseau said. "We can't let dirty tricks get us down." Brandon Wislocki then lead off the sixth with a single and stole second before a Ken Kwarciany single and a Bryan Wislocki walk loaded the bases. However Brandon Wislocki was gunned down at the plate on a Todd Small grounder and James Haas struck out to end the inning.
The Wildcats did cut into the lead in the eighth on a Justin Young single and a Bryan Wislocki double but the real rally came down to the bottom of the ninth. After Haas grounded to third and Dave Vincent flew out to right, the bottom of the order got things going. Ingles drove the ball to left. Trenkle followed suit two pitches later to put runners on the corners. A Brandon Wislocki double down the line in left sent Ingles
across the plate and sent Trenkle to third. Two more runs scored on a triple by Young, who then scored on a Kwarciany single. Bryan Wislocki ended the game with a double scoring Kwarciany to make the final 7-6.
Josh Pifke got his third win of the last week and fourth of the year, finishing the game with 2 strong innings, striking out 3 and throwing just 15 pitches. The Wildcats face the host school North Central Michigan College tomorrow afternoon in the GLIB championship game. NCMC beat Delta College in the other semifinal 4-3.
