In the second of their three exhibition games against Division I foes, the NMU baseball team could not hold off
the University of Buffalo. The Bulls took an early 3-0 lead in the second inning on back to back home runs by
Tom Pfefferburg and Mike Ornstein. Bulls DH Ronny Silver sparked a four run rally in the fifth to drive first
Wildcat started Kris Koester, then reliever Vinnie Davidson from the mound.
Josh Pifke stemmed the tide for 2 innings before he ran into trouble, yielding four consecutive hits and 3
runs. Jean Chiquet worked his way out of the jam and finished the game, though Pfefferburg touched him with
a solo home run. Bulls pitcher Hira Matsuki scattered five hits over his eight innings of work.
The Wildcats earned their lone run the hard way in the sixth when Jason Paul and Brandon Wilsocki hit back
to back singles. Bryan Wislocki brought Paul home with a sacrifice bunt. The Wildcats managed just seven
base runners all day.
"We just didn't have it today," Manager Rob Preseau said. "Perhaps the road trip has worn us out, but we've
been playing so well lately I didn't expect this kind of performance. "It was almost like we didn't care out
there today," Paul admitted. "We were outgunned, but we didn't put up much effort either."
The Wildcats finally get to return home after ten days on the road. They will face UW Fox Valley in a
doubleheader tomorrow.
