The NMU baseball team had a close call in their return home but held on to win a pair from Central State of
Columbus, OH. New starting shortstop Jason Paul kicked off the scoring in the third inning of game one with
a double, crossing home plate on a double by Brandon Wislocki. That was all the scoring until the sixth when
Bryan Wislocki tripled and scored on a single by Ken Kwarciany.
After Kris Koester held off CSU for 8 innings, Dave Peck blew the lead in the ninth when Donnie Crawford
tied the game with a two-run homer. CSU ace Mike McGill opened the bottom of the ninth by striking out both
Wislockis on seven pitches. He had Kwarciany down 0-2 but the Wildcat DH took the third pitch to right with
a solo shot to win the game. McGill gunned down 20 Wildcats in his 8 2/3 innings of work in the loss. Peck
gets the win despite a rough inning of work. Koester struck out 10 and walked just 3 for the no-decision.
In game two Jim Pool and Marty Falworth threw dueling perfect games for six innings before Pool surrendered a
walk. Brandon Wislocki broke up the dueling no-hitters with a single in the bottom of the inning. Though he
stole second and third, he could not score. Pool gave up a single and a walk in the ninth before being pulled.
A Vincent Carcartio single off of reliever Jean Chiquet put CSU ahead. But Falworth could not hold the lead.
Though Eric Ingles and right fielder Kevin Trenkle were sent down in order to start the bottom of the ninth,
Brandon Wislocki sparked a two-out rally by striking out and reaching first on an error by catcher Dave Polini.
Brandon Wislocki stole second before his brother Bryan singled. Justin Young was intentionally walked to load
the bases and lefty Nick O'Hanlon was brought on to face left handed hitter Ken Kwarciany. The odds did not
work as Kwarciany drove the ball to right, scoring both Wislockis.
"This is the closest we've come all year to blowing the winning streak," Manager Rob Preseau said. "Our
starting pitchers kept us in it and our clutch hitting by the top of our order won it." "There pitching was
just as strong as ours," Pool said. "We had to step up and make big plays and our defense did just that."
This was the first game for the new double play combination of Jason Paul and Eric Ingles after Kevin Trenkle
moved to right field. "I still have to get used to Jason's abilities but they aren't too different from
Kevin's," Ingles said. "I feel our infield is still a defensive strong point." Trenkle was moved after
misplaying a ball in short centerfield in the UWGB game. Ingles made up for the play with a diving catch.
"I'd rather be at short, but I'll do what Preseau tells me to," Trenkle said. "If he tells me to play right,
I will. If he tells me to sit, I will. If he tells me to put a shotgun in my mouth, I will." The Wildcats go
to Flint to face Kettering in a non-conference double header.
