Michigan Tech had not beaten the Wildcats since 1998, and had been winless at Beef-A-Roo Field since 1994 entering the Conference opener. Pitchers Chris Bing and Aino Kinnunen wowed the crowd for six innings before Brandon Wislocki finally broke through with a triple to left before scoring on a pased ball. Bing was able to hold the lead until the eighth when Tommy Annomaki looped a double up the gap in left-center, scoring Matt Heinonen.

Bing and Kinnunen shut down the offenses for inning after inning through the ninth, tenth and eleventh. Toivo Kimmu hit a solo home run to right in the twelfth, matched by a Ken Kwarciany shot in the bottom of that inning. Jason Paul, Eric Ingles, and James Haas hit consecutive singles in the thirteenth but could not produce a run. The Huskies broke things open in the fourteenth when Mike Uski tripled and scored on a double by Annomaki.

Tyler Etelemaki tripled to bring Annomaki home and scored himself on a dropped fly ball by right fielder Kevin Trenkle, inserted to replace Haas for defensive reasons. Dave Vincent sparked a two-out rally in the bottom of that inning on a single to left. A Gordon Glas double put him on third. Paul was intentionally walked and Ingles made the Huskies pay with a single to left scoring two runs.

With men on the corners Todd Small pinch hit for Trenkle and saw a fastball to his liking, driving it to left field. But Uski made a remarkable diving grab, ending the threat and sending the Wildcats to their third straight loss.

"We wanted to get things off to a good start in conference play," Manager Rob Preseau said. "Michigan Tech is one of the teams with a chance to knock us off the top, and they showed they have the team to do it."

The Wildcats look for their first conference win of the year against Finlandia tomorrow.
